Good Cornish grub - without tourist prices…..
Just returned from a fab break in Cornwall. Fortunately, the weather was pretty kind to us and we found some great places to visit - and great places to eat!
We stayed around the St Ives / Hayle area of Cornwall, so if you’re in that neck of the woods, give these places a try:
Trevaskis Farm Restaurant, Connor Downs (near Hayle) - serve really hearty meals with produce from their own farms. Open from breakfast until evening meal - but popping in for coffee and cakes is an experience not to be missed! The size of the portions is huge and we have never seen such enormous chocolate eclairs!
Philps Bakery, Hayle - just THE BEST Cornish pasties ever. There is always a queue at the door, a great sign of a good bakery. Again, sizes are huge - the small pasty is big enough for most. The medium sized one lasted me 2 meals…… Open every day, including Sundays and Bank Holidays in peak season.
Mr B’s Ice Cream Parlour, Hayle - great ice cream to eat in or take out. Award winning ice cream parlour and great value too. We had a single scoop cone that was huge and only £1.30 (compared to a skinny little cone in St Ives for £1.80).
I wanted to try Sofia’s Cafe on the Promenade in Penzance but, unfortunately, we didn’t stay in Penzance into the evening. It received a great write up in The Times as one of the best fish & chip restaurants in the country but, looking at the menu in the restaurant window, it seems to be much nicer than your regular chippie. Lots of different fish and seafood on the menu and some delicious sounding puds. It’s licensed and the menu prices didn’t seem bad at all, especially when compared to some of the prices in St Ives and other touristy areas. If you’ve tried it, let me know. It’s definitely on my list of places to eat when I next visit the Penzance area.
