Camping in Dalby Forest
Since we have already been abroad this year and paid the price in more ways than one, we thought we would try a holiday a little closer to home. Dalby Forest I heard, is a great place to bring the family if you enjoy the outdoors and especially cycling. As we have a dog we liked the idea of staying on a site where we could bring Minna along. We found a great place, it turns out, right on the edge of the forest although I have to say the facilities are basic but clean at least. Although it was great being so close for easy access and spooky night walks, with hindsight I think I would have stayed closer to one of the towns as it makes little difference being on the edge of the forest as you need a car to get in and out anyway unless you are up to long rides in and out of the forest on top of your chosen forest route.
The visitor centre is really nice; cafe, play area for the children and one of the few places I have come across where they allow bbqs on the grounds of the facilities. We took a blue route today which took just under an hour for 7 miles; not bad considering at least half of it was up hill!
Go Ape is based in Dalby Forest too, great fun if your over 10 year olds don’t mind heights! Be prepared to join in though, your kids have to be supervised!
Lots of places nearby to visit; we took a 30 minute drive to Scarborough, we only stayed a couple of hours as we got a little unexpected sunshine so the boys ended up in the sea without spare clothes or towels! As you can imagine we headed home soon after! Looks like a lively town though from our drive through.
We visited Robin Hoods Bay which was a really sweet village, a few cafes and shops and a real break from the busy towns. Yesterday we visited Whitby and spent most of the time rubbing shoulders with strangers whilst trying to make our way around the shops; so if you like the tourist track this is a place to go!
