Alonissos is the least developed of the Sporades Islands, in the north Aegean sea. The island is surrounded by a marine park, principally for the protection of the monk seal, and so has some of the cleanest water in the Mediterranean. There are many beaches and a network of signposted paths for the dedicated walker and naturalist. (more…)

Beamish Museum in the North East of England is an absolutely fantastic day out for all the family. It’s an outdoor museum set in the 1800s/early 1900s and, as you arrive at the site, an old-fashioned tram system allows you to hop on and hop off to visit all the different places in the grounds. There’s a town, railway station, manor house, farm, colliery and miners cottages – but it’s the fantastic attention to detail that makes it all such fun ………

Although many people have heard of Andorra with its kilometres of tax-fee shopping and its five ski resorts, only very few have actually ventured further than the Pas de la Casa or Andorra la Vella where a different world awaits them, still untouched by mass tourism and far away from the main shopping streets: mountains ranging up to almost 3000m, quiet and beautiful valleys, mountain lakes that contain trout, forests with crystal streams… (more…)

It’s amazing what is on your doorstep – and what you never go to see – because we all tend to travel to be tourists, rather than be local tourists. However, when my mum visited from Cornwall she went to the Portland Basin Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside and urged us to take a look too – and we were delighted that we did. (more…)
